Joburg Ballet brings African dance to China

South African choreographer and dancer Kitty Phetla is in Beijing right now as the first black South African to stage a choreography with the Central Ballet of China. Carmina Burana is a contemporary dance performance conceived by Kitty who has just completed a three-city Chinese tour with her company the Joburg Ballet. Kitty performed the milestone dance with dancers from the Central Ballet of China at a gala on December 5th attended by President Xi Jinping and South African President Jacob Zuma. In the video, Kitty talks about her journey starting from a Johannesburg township to performing ballet in front of presidents as well as how important it is for her, as a black African dancer, to break down stereotypes about the continent amongst her audiences.
