What is there of interest for tourists in Batangas City? Nothing, but a friendly welcome. I received a lot of female attention in Batangas, a lot more than I usually get anyway. For once I didn’t feel invisible there. Girls on the street were openly smiling at me which I haven’t captured on film as my cameras were in my bag, so you can’t say they were reacting to the camera, they were reacting to me. And my big nose. Get out the big cities to smaller cities where foreigners are a rarity and will receive heartfelt smiles and a warm welcome. There’s a shortage of decent accommodation in Batangas around the 1000 pesos or $20 mark, so I’m having to spend closer to $30. I hadn’t booked anything yet. I normally like to see a room before committing. I will rock up at a place and the reception will quote me a higher price that what it costs to book online, so I’ll stand there booking either on Agoda or Booking. Com. Or rarely on Expedia which is where I extended the hotel in Balayan as it was cheaper. Prices vary between the websites so it’s best to check each of them separately. The majority of hotels in Batangas City proper didn’t have great reviews. There is a recommended hotel near the port but I didn’t want to stay in that area, so I spent the bus journey watching the heavy rain out the window trying to book an AirBnb across the river, near sM city on the other side of Batangas, but I kept getting an error message and had to message AirBnB support. I just needed to verify the credit card through my UK sim which is always a worry in case the code doesn’t come through. But it did. Fi nally. Phew! So I headed across the river to an AirBnB costing me 1580 pesos or $28, the most expensive room I’ve paid for since leaving Manila a fortnight earlier. And what a frustrating journey this turned out to be. The AirBnB host the previous evening had accepted my request to extend for a second night, but I didn’t want to book the extension until after my first night’s sleep. When I tried extending the following morning I was told it wasn’t unavailable, which was actually a godsend as all there is around here is an SM Mall, so it forced me to move into city proper where all the action is. The Meaco hotel is a bit rundown but it was okay for one night at 1300 pesos. I’d walked into a carinderia, placed my order and sat down. Princess and Miguel were on the next table. She smiled at and I said Hello to them both. Minutes later Princess walked over to my table with a couple of bags of sweets offering me to take some. Now I’ve said this many times and I’m gonna repeat myself again - Filipinos of all ages are genuinely friendly and hospitable. Countless times have I walked past a table doing shots whose first reaction is to offer me one. The west could learn a lot from filipino hospitality.
