I saw a big pregnancy's toad in the garden and many of big snails there. They are living in the garden and like to get out at night or after rain. The snails like to eat small plants on the wall. That is an impressive collection of land snails! Based on their large, glossy shells and the distinct spiral patterns, these look very much like members of the Camaenidae family, specifically a genus like Hemiplecta or Cryptozona, which are quite common in Southeast Asia. These snails are fascinating "ecosystem engineers" that help break down organic matter. Here is a bit more about what makes them unique: Key Characteristics Shell Structure: Notice how the shells have a "depressed" or flattened globe shape. This helps them navigate through leaf litter and tight spaces on the forest floor. The "Foot": The large, muscular part of the body visible in the bottom right is called the foot. It secretes mucus (slime) that allows the snail to glide over rough surfaces while protecting its delicate tissues. Nocturnal Habits: These snails are most active at night or after a heavy rain when the humidity is high, which prevents them from drying out. Fun Facts Sensory Tentacles: The longer "horns" on their heads have light-sensitive eyes at the tips, while the shorter pair below are used for smelling and feeling their way around. Diet: Most of these large land snails are generalist herbivores, munching on decaying leaves, fungi, and sometimes fallen fruit. Calcium Seekers: To keep those shells strong and thick, they often seek out calcium-rich soil or even nibble on limestone. Handling Tips If you are observing or keeping them temporarily, keep these things in mind: Hydration is Key: They need a damp environment to stay healthy. A light misting of water goes a long way. Clean Hands: If you handle them, make sure your hands are free of salt, lotions, or chemicals, as their skin is highly absorbent and sensitive.
