The mosque and Wonokerso Hamlet are located in the beautiful and welcoming Sendangrejo Village, Baturetno District, Wonogiri Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. After congregational dawn prayers at the Tiban Wonokerso Mosque, I then enjoyed the morning in the surrounding village. It truly is a typical rural atmosphere that often makes migrants miss it. According to local residents, this village was founded after Prince Sambernyawa was appointed Duke of Mangkunegaran in Surakarta. So, there are two distinct things related to the village and the mosque. The mosque was built during the era of sainthood in Java. It was built after the Walisongo (saints) wandered south in search of wood for the later construction of the Demak Mosque. However, after the wood was obtained, the mosque was abandoned in the forest. Some time later, after the breakup of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom, a rebellion broke out within the Surakarta Sultanate, led by Prince Sambernyawa. The Sultanate, aided by the Dutch, then launched a manhunt for Sambernyawa. While fleeing, Prince Sambernyawa arrived at this location, which at the time was still forested. He and his troops accidentally discovered the mosque, already covered by dense trees. The Tiban Mosque is estimated to have been built around 1479 AD. Calculating the age, it is over 510 years old.
