Plasmodium vivax – Liver Schizogony | Malaria Life Cycle (Hepatic Stage) Description: This video explains the liver schizogony (pre-erythrocytic stage) in the life cycle of Plasmodium vivax, the causative agent of benign tertian malaria. After an infected female Anopheles mosquito bites a human, sporozoites enter the bloodstream and quickly migrate to the liver. Inside hepatocytes, sporozoites grow and multiply asexually by schizogony, forming hepatic schizonts. These schizonts rupture to release merozoites into the bloodstream, which then invade red blood cells and start the erythrocytic cycle. In Plasmodium vivax, some sporozoites remain dormant in the liver as hypnozoites, which can reactivate later and cause relapse of malaria.
