Why China Abandoned Taiwan in 1895?

The Republic of Formosa was a short-lived, unrecognized country that existed on the island of Taiwan in 1895. It was established in wake of the First Sino-Japanese War, when Qing dynasty China's formally ceded the territory (and nearby Penghu or Pescadores Islands) to the Empire of Japan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki. However, unenthusiastic about Imperial Japanese occupation, the people of Formosa - a name by which Taiwan was commonly known well into the 20th century - under the leadership of Qiu Fengjia, Tang Jingsong, Liu Yongfu, and others, declared creation of an independent republic on May 23, 1895.
