THOUSANDS Attend Lord Murugan Chariot Procession (Thaipusam Celebrations Begin in Kuala Lumpur)

On Sunday night, Thaipusam celebrations began with the Silver Chariot of Lord Murugan departing from the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and beginning its long journey to Batu Caves. This important Hindu festival occurs every year on the first full moon day of the Tamil month of Thai. This is also when the star Pusam is at its highest and brightest position. The name of the celebration comes from the combination of those two words: Thaipusam. The festival celebrates the victory of Lord Murugan over the demon Soorapadman. Lord Murugan defeated Soorapadman with the help of the vel, a divine spear given to him by his mother, the Hindu goddess Parvati. This victory is symbolic of good defeating evil. The Silver Chariot will wind its way through the streets of Kuala Lumpur over the following days attended by hundreds of devotees, some of whom will be carrying large and small burdens, known as kavadi. I was able to witness the moment when Lord Murugan's chariot procession left from the Sri Maha Mariamman temple and began its journey.
