Mangwon-dong was a typical residential area of Seoul, although it is now so popular that it is nicknamed Mangridan-gil. It was a working-class area where many multi-family homes were clustered. Mangwon Market is a traditional Korean market and is a market for local residents. It's not as big as Gwangjang Market, but it's a market with everything. Mangwon-dong has become a hip area like now because of Hongdae. As Hongdae has expanded, many artists, young merchants have moved to the cheaper Mangwon-dong. The number of unique shops increased one by one, forming what is now Mangridan-gil. So, not many large franchises have entered Mangwon-dong yet.
