Some other cell biologists work in agriculture to study how plant cells respond to different environmental factors. Staining Cells: Cells are usually clear and colorless, so it is hard to see their structures under microscope. Stains (dyes) are used to add color and make the cell's structures more visible. There are different types of stains, where some stains are used to highlight one part of cells and make it more visible such as "methylene blue" dye that helps you see the nucleus as a blue area in a sample of cheek lined membrane cells. Cells in 3D: • Scientists have built a microscope that shows the cell in 3D, which means that they can see the top, sides and layers of a cell, where: The 3D microscope takes pictures of a cell in layers. Then, a computer puts these layers together.
