When asked if he was following Bukele's model, he didn't hide it: he said yes. He has the rhetoric, the energy, and the popular mandate of a country that in 2025 experienced its most violent year of the last decade. The problem is that Bukele started with healthy public finances, and De la Espriella will enter the Casa de Nariño (Presidential Palace) with record-high debt, a 33% drop in foreign investment, and an economy barely growing above 2.5%. Uribe tried something similar twenty years ago, and it worked: homicides fell, the FARC were decimated, and the state recovered territory. But the Colombia of that time was very different from today's. Now there are dozens of criminal groups instead of three or four large ones, geography remains an insurmountable problem, and every peso spent on security competes with pensions, healthcare, and the interest payments on a debt that keeps growing.
