For many years, I misunderstood the word "emptiness." I thought Buddha wanted me to empty myself, to become stone. Later I understood—emptiness is the infinite potential before you are molded into a fixed form. You see a child playing with clay, making a dinosaur, feeling proud for half a second, then immediately rolling it up and starting over. He didn't hesitate, because he knew—the dinosaur wasn't the point; having fun was. As we grow up, we forget this. We mold ourselves into "bosses," "fathers," "adults who must be strong," then desperately protect that shape, afraid it will crumble. The Heart Sutra says, "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." It's not that the role you play is fake. It's that you shouldn't forget, you are essentially that soft lump of clay. Broken doesn't mean disappearing. It means you can start anew. — This is the second poem in the "Wisdom to Reach the Other Shore" series.
