He adjusted the graduating class's grade to a C minus and remarked about giving MIT graduates a head start on their job hunt. O'Brien noted that the first graduating class in 1642 had only nine students, all of whom were legacies, and claimed no university has produced more Nobel laureates or white-collar criminals. Addressing student concerns about free laundry, fresh berries, and complimentary coffee, O'Brien dismissed them as complaints from a brown bear. He assured the graduates that artificial intelligence cannot replace them, as it will be too busy replacing students from Princeton. O'Brien reflected on his own graduation in 1985 and his career trajectory, noting that his Harvard degree became less important as he embraced community, spontaneity, and humility. He shared experiences from his travel shows, including being ejected from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and kicked out of the Ashanti Palace in Ghana, to emphasize the value of letting oneself be bad at things. O'Brien criticized the current leadership in Washington for believing that empathy is a weakness and that the nation stands supreme and alone. He warned against the extreme narcissism fueled by algorithmically programmed phones and urged the graduates to de-emphasize their prize degrees to find real growth and connection. Acknowledging his own ego and the titles of his various shows, O'Brien admitted he would not turn down his honorary doctorate and remarked about asking for a cash component. He shared a piece of advice from his grandfather, a traffic cop in Worcester, Massachusetts, who told him to take what he can get and ask for more.
