Day 1 of 5: From Heavy Livestock Fixation to Calm Avoidance with Otto the GSD 🐺❌🐑 Today I welcomed Otto, a beautiful German Shepherd, for his intensive 5-day E-Collar bootcamp. Otto has a severe history of livestock predation and has spent the last 13 months confined to police kennels due to his chasing history. Today, we took him right out onto the blustery moors to face his biggest trigger: active sheep. When we started, Otto was screaming and lunging, completely locked into his predatory drive. By the end of this session, his mindset completely transformed. What you will see in today’s video: The Power of Clear Communication: Watch how quickly Otto goes from intense, vocal frustration to calmly choosing to disengage from the sheep. We found his precise, low-level working setting straight off the bat, allowing us to interrupt the dangerous fixation without causing fear or distress. Real-World Handling Critiques: Dog training is a team sport, and training the human is often the hardest part! Watch out for the on-screen critiques where we break down the handler's coordination. For a reliable recall, the owner must combine the dog's name, the verbal command ("Come"), and a physical guide on the long line simultaneously. The Dog's Intelligence: Otto is incredibly smart. Even when the handler missed the line cue or delayed the command, Otto's understanding of the boundary was so clear that he actively chose to turn away from the sheep and return to his owner on his own accord.
