■ Egypt, Luxor After visiting the Valley of the Kings, I stopped for lunch in a town on the way to the ferry terminal to cross to the eastern side of Luxor. This town is further proof that you can often find truly kind and friendly locals, even outside of the tourist areas. Afterward, I cycled back to the port with my camera battery running low. I was determined to cross by public boat, despite the taxi owner's attempts to cajole me into using his. Even though it was a public boat, the ticket collector still took the small change I gave him by not giving me change. With the long lines and the tedious negotiations, I decided to let it slide. I finally completed my bicycle tour of the eastern side, albeit several hours later than planned. I headed straight for Karnak Temple, knowing it was closing time. I didn't spend much time at Karnak Temple, as I was concerned about my camera battery life. I had originally planned to visit Luxor Temple on the same day, but I had to cancel my plan and return to my accommodation on the western side to try again the next day. The next day, after my three-night tour of the Egyptian-style apartments, I decided to explore the remaining sights of the Nile. But, pressed for time and missing the ferry, I decided to walk back and take a water taxi, even though I knew I'd be charged significantly more than the usual price. The boat owner initially tried to persuade me to use his boats beyond the ferry, but since I had no plans to go anywhere other than the Luxor Temples and the central market, he agreed to take me on the water taxi. One thing I noticed was that when I turned off the camera, he seemed rather annoyed with me not joining him on the Nile tour. Before boarding, I decided to turn the camera back on. And it turned out right. He tried to change his tone, smiled friendly, and said several things that made me feel like he was overpromoting his image on camera. When we got on the boat, I decided to give him 100 Egyptian pounds, more than the initial 50, because I considered the time on the boat to be a good time. He provided excellent service. But no matter how I explained or expressed my desire to travel alone, he simply followed me, making me feel uncomfortable. I knew his ultimate goal was to persuade me to return to his services on the return trip. I finally managed to walk away from the boat owner, and I explored Luxor Temple for about an hour, then went shopping at the central market, as planned. However, I was so engrossed in the market that I almost missed my pre-booked bus. I had to rush back to retrieve my luggage that morning and cross back to the east coast. When I arrived at the boarding point, I was met by a ticket inspector who demanded a tip for my luggage, even though this service was already included in the fare. What surprised me about tipping here is that the service provider can decide whether a certain amount is too little or too little, even though, according to international standards, tipping should be based on the satisfaction of the customer.
