Gorton Cemetery⎜Paupers Graves, Salford Sioux and Foo Foo Lammar⎜
help us out here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/replace-fa... Gorton cemetery opened July 26th 1900, and covers around 13 hectares or 32 acres, with over 18,000 graves and 80,000 burials since it opened. The site previously housed 3 chapels running north to south from the main entrance. one for non-conformists, Church of England and Roman Catholic, connected with archways between them. They have all since been demolished. At the rear of the cemetery is a small ditch known as Nico Ditch, thought to have been constructed around the 7th or 8th centuries as a boundary marker between what was the Anglo Saxon Kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria, thought to have been completed in a single night to protect against Viking invaders. The site contains at least two famous individuals and a memorial stone for a third. Francis Joseph Pearon, better known to some as Foo Foo Lammar, was a British drag queen and nightclub owner, known as one of the North of England's most popular female impersonators and described by the BBC as “legendary", died on the 7th November 2003 after suffering with cancer. The Salford Sioux, otherwise known as Charging Thunder or George Williams, was a member of the Buffalo Bills Wild West Circus. He came over to the UK late 1887 to perform with the circus, setting up camp by the River Irwell. However, after the birth of his daughter Bessie, he chose to stay in Manchester, changing his name to George Williams. It was thought that those in the circus were traveling the world to escape the US Cavalry. There is a memorial stone dedicated to Davy Jones, of The Monkees, who initially struggled to gain fame until the TV show for The Monkees came about. He eventually provided lead vocals for the band for several years before they disbanded. After this, he had a short solo career before he unfortunately died on the 29th February 2012, aged 66, after a heart attack. He was cremated in the USA and returned home briefly to be placed on his parents' grave before returning to family. Music by: https://pixabay.com/users/mildrelaxat...
