The Seraphic Samuel Pearce: Inaugural Lecture of the Reformed Baptist Study Centre | Michael Haykin
In this inaugural lecture launching the Reformed Baptist Study Centre, Michael Haykin presents Samuel Pearce (1766–1799), minister of Cannon Street Particular Baptist Church in Birmingham (1790–1799), as a model of piety and sound theology. Drawing on reminiscences from William Jay, Andrew Fuller and others, Haykin highlights Pearce’s Christ-centered preaching, devotion to holiness, and love for souls. He traces Pearce’s conversion in 1782, training at Bristol Baptist Academy, and fruitful Birmingham ministry amid industrial and Unitarian challenges. Haykin recounts Pearce’s compassion in preaching, his fruitful marriage, his influential 1796 ministry trip to Ireland, his zeal for foreign missions, and his desire for France even during wartime, before his death from tuberculosis in 1799.
