Exploring Vashon Island - March 2018

One of the best things about visiting Vashon Island is that you get to take the ferry there and back. Prices can be a little steep… You can spend over $20 for a round trip ticket if you want to take your car over. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes to cross over from Point Defiance to the southern tip of Vashon You can get out of your car and enjoy the views from the upper deck... well, unless you go on a day like today and it’s super foggy. Killer whales have been sighted on some of these ferry routes to and from the island. But all we saw today were some pooping birds… Stop #3 was the country store and farm – a cute little shop that sells all sorts of gardening supplies, maps of the island, and some fantastic shirts. We met a super friendly woman named Jan who told us all about the island and said that our next destination had to be the Snapdragon Café. This little restaurant and bakery is located in the center of the island and is known for their amazing soups and salads. Well, who were we to say no to Jan? Again, the staff was really friendly and it’s a funky space that smells like freshly baked pastries. Although they are known for their salads, Taylor and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to try their egg sandwich, made with a buttered crescent and tons of gooey cheese. After Fisher’s Pond we took a leisurely drive to what is probably the most iconic spot on Vashon island. The Point Robinson Lighthouse has been in use since 1885 and sits on a 10 acre shoreline park. You can get tours of the lighthouse from mid-May through mid-Spetember. Thanks to Taylor Rawson for being our tour guide today!
