Welcome to the most obese city in the world! We're in McAllen. Here, nearly one in two people is obese, and almost half of the rest is overweight. This means three out of four people living on the streets are at risk of serious health problems and premature death. This city is designed to make people so fat they can't get out of bed. McAllen residents order fast food up to three times a day, and the trend shows no sign of slowing. McAllen is a small, low-income city in Texas, located near the Mexican border. With over 500 fast food establishments for a population of 150,000, the fast food density here is nearly six times higher than the US average. Obesity here is also driven by urban planning that discourages traffic. This city is built for cars. Most parks are located in the southern and western parts of the city, often a 20-minute drive or nearly a two-hour walk from residential areas. With year-round heat and humidity around 90°F (32°C), outdoor exercise becomes even more challenging. To understand why obesity is so prevalent in the city, I also spent a day eating like a typical McAllen local. In the video, I also interviewed one of the most obese people in the world.
