HOW TO RAISING ANTS IN A TERRARIUM? 🤔 Hello everyone, In this video, I show you the many steps you need to go through before raising a large colony of ants in a huge terrarium designed for observing them. 👍 After filming the assembly of this terrarium, I waited two years before editing this video 😲, allowing the ant colony to grow and dig the tunnels you see at the end. 🤩 Raising ants is truly about learning patience. 😄 Enjoy watching and a big THANK YOU to Alexandre for his welcome, his advice, and some of the footage. 😉 See you soon. The Ant Colony (Queen and Workers) The essential starting point is a fertilized queen ant. A single queen cannot found a colony. Species selection: For beginners, species such as Lasius niger (black garden ant) or Messor barbarus (harvester ant) are often recommended because they are hardy and relatively easy to raise. 2. The Formicarium (Colony Habitat) Test Tube: This is the ideal initial habitat for a single queen and the start of the colony. Formicarium made of plaster, Ytong (aerated concrete), or acrylic (no gel) The Hunting Area (Arena): This is an open space connected to the nest where the ants can forage for food and dispose of their waste. It must be large enough to allow for exploration and facilitate feeding. Add a little substrate (sand, potting soil), small pebbles, or decorative elements. 3. Humidity and Temperature Most ant species require constant humidity, especially in the nest, for the development of eggs and larvae. The ideal temperature varies depending on the species, but most European ants thrive between 20 and 28°C. 4. Diet Carbohydrate sources: Honey, sugar syrup (water + sugar), artificial honeydew. These provide energy. Protein sources: Essential for the queen (egg production) and larval development. Feed dead insects (crickets, cockroaches, mealworms) purchased from a pet store or pre-killed and frozen to prevent disease. Make sure the insects are not treated with pesticides. - Water: Always available in the hunting area in the form of a dropper or a small watering bowl with a cotton ball to prevent drowning. Frequency: A few times a week, depending on the size of the colony. Always remove any uneaten food scraps to prevent mold. 5. Transition from Test Tube to Formicarium When the colony in the test tube becomes too large (about twenty workers or more), it is time to transfer them to a larger formicarium. 6. Hygiene and Cleaning Remove waste from the hunting area (food scraps, dead worker bees). Clean the hunting area if it becomes too dirty. Avoid cleaning the inside of the nest. 7. Darkness and Quietness Ants are very sensitive to vibrations and light in the nest. 8. Overwintering (Diapause) Many temperate ant species (such as Lasius niger) require a hibernation period to reproduce and live longer. 9. Escape and Safety Ants are escape artists! Use escape-proof solutions: Talc and alcohol: Mix talc with alcohol and apply a strip to the upper edges of the ant nest. Mineral oil or petroleum jelly Fluon (PTFE) Make sure the ant nest lid is tightly closed and there are no cracks. 10. Patience and Observation Raising ants is a matter of patience. Colonies grow slowly, especially at the beginning. One of the greatest pleasures is observing their complex behavior: tunnel construction, feeding, communication, larval care, and division of labor. By following these tips, you will be well prepared to start your own ant colony and enjoy it to the fullest!
