Why Does the Bible Speak So Harshly Against Fools?

Reading through Proverbs and other areas of the Bible you come across a number of passages that speak quite negatively about "fools." Yes, other not so great traits of humanity are spoken about with disdain as well, but many of the others are either explained or already overtly clear as to the reason for such dislike or admonition against. But, simply being a fool--ignorant, moronic, lacking in knowledge and understanding--doesn't seem to be worthy of the critical abhorrence that the Bible gives it. Could it be that "fool" means something else entirely, and that is what deserves the criticism it gets?
