And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) loved to hear the Quran recited by others. He instructed Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may God be pleased with him) to recite the Quran to him while he listened. He was so moved by the recitation that tears welled in his blessed eyes (peace and blessings be upon him), as will be discussed later. Seeking to listen to a recitation from a reciter with a beautiful voice and skillful delivery is unanimously considered desirable. It was the practice of the righteous and pious predecessors of this nation. A well-proficient recitation has a profound impact on understanding the meanings of the Quran. However, this must be guided by the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when listening: paying close attention, responding attentively, and then reflecting upon the Quran in a way that removes the veil of ignorance and motivates the heart to action. God Almighty has commanded His servants to listen to the Quran attentively and be mindful of it. So that they may benefit from it and reflect upon its wisdom and benefits, and thereby attain the mercy of God Almighty. He, the Exalted, said: {And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it attentively and be silent, so that you may receive mercy} [Al-A’raf: 204]. Al-Layth said: It is said that mercy comes to no one more quickly than to the one who listens to the Qur’an, because of the words of God, the Majestic, the Exalted: {And when the Qur’an is recited, then listen to it attentively and be silent, so that you may receive mercy}, and “so that” – from God – is a certainty. [2] That is, so that you may attain mercy and win it by obeying the command of God Almighty. “The difference between listening and paying attention is that paying attention outwardly means refraining from speaking or engaging in anything that distracts from listening. But truly listening means giving it your full attention, focusing your heart, and reflecting upon what you hear. For whoever adheres to these two things when the Book of God is recited will attain abundant good, vast knowledge, continuous and renewed faith, increasing guidance, and insight into their religion. This is why God has ordained that mercy be bestowed upon them.” The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, informed us that gathering to study and listen to the Qur’an has great and significant benefits, including: receiving God’s mercy, as he, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “No people gather in one of God’s houses, reciting God’s Book and studying it amongst themselves, except that tranquility descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and God mentions them to those with Him.”
