Feride, who lost her mother at a young age, is brought to Istanbul by her father, a soldier, to live with her grandmother. When her grandmother dies, Feride’s father enrolls her in Notre Dame de Sion French Boarding School, for her to receive a good education. Here, she is nicknamed "Çalıkuşu" because of her mischievous behavior and refusing to get down from the tree in the school garden. She spends her summer vacations with her aunts. Soon after, she also loses her father, and becomes and orphan. Feride grows up to be a very beautiful young girl.
