But in reality it is a battle of influential groups, conspiracies, intrigues and even real crimes. Throughout history, conclaves have turned into protracted wars, and some elections ended with the massacre of competitors. How exactly is the Pope elected? Cardinals are locked in the Sistine Chapel, incommunicado, and vote until one candidate receives the required two-thirds of the vote. But even under strict rules, the most pious have not always won. There have been cases in history when the title of pontiff was literally bought, candidates hired mercenaries to eliminate competitors, and secular rulers interfered in the elections. In 366, two people wanted to occupy the papal throne at once - Damasius and Ursinus. Damasius did not rely on the will of God and decided the issue more radically: his supporters physically eliminated their rivals. It is worth mentioning separately the Western Schism - one of the largest splits in the Catholic Church. In 1378, after the death of Pope Gregory XI, the cardinals elected a new pontiff - Urban VI. But a group of French cardinals refused to recognize him and proclaimed Clement VII the true Pope. The problem was that Clement did not live in Rome, but in Avignon, and France and her allies were behind him. As a result, two Popes appeared, each of whom excommunicated the other. After some time, the situation became even more complicated - in 1409 a council was convened in Pisa, at which another Pope was elected. Conclaves often became a theater of intrigue. One of the most absurd moments was the "Corpse Synod" of 897, when Pope Stephen VI put his predecessor on trial. Seven months after his death, Formosus's body was dug up from his grave, dressed in papal robes, placed on a throne and tried for "illegitimate occupation of the throne." The verdict? The deceased was stripped of his title and two fingers of his right hand and thrown into the Tiber River. But history has a strange humor. Less than a year later, Stephen VI himself was deposed and imprisoned. There was a period in the history of the Catholic Church that modern historians call the "saeculum obscurum". It lasted from about 904 to 964 and was characterized by the fact that women of aristocratic Roman lineage had enormous influence on the election and removal of Popes. The most famous among them was Marozia, daughter of the Roman patrician Theophylact, who effectively ruled the church through her favorites and even her relatives. In 914, thanks to her efforts, John X, her lover, became Pope. However, when his influence ceased to suit her interests, Marozia ordered his removal. After that, she supported Pope Leo VI, who reigned for only a few months (928) and died mysteriously. Then Stephen VII became Pope, who also did not stay on the throne for long. But Marozia achieved her greatest level of control in 931, when she made her own son, John XI, Pope. His reign lasted until 935, when he was effectively captured by his half-brother, Alberic II, who removed Marozia from power. This period only ended in 964, when the German Emperor Otto I decided to put an end to the chaos in the Vatican. He invaded Rome, deposed the next Pope, John XII, who was remembered for his extremely dissolute lifestyle, and established control over the papal elections. Even into the 20th century, papal elections remained a battleground for various factions. In 1903, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I used his veto power to block the election of Mariano Rampolla, the last instance of secular interference in the conclave. But even after that, political maneuvering did not cease.
