A small cabinet under the sink is useful for concealing bathroom items whose existence is known to everyone, but whose presence you don't necessarily want to be obvious. It can also be used to hide less aesthetically pleasing plumbing fixtures. ★ ... The fact that these things should be inspected from time to time becomes clear when looking at this siphon. It has almost more rust than chrome. But how is that possible? No one in the household had noticed a blockage, meaning the water was only draining moderately! There's no way around it; the siphon, and ideally the drain assembly as well, need to be replaced. For newcomers to this task, there are, of course, a few mistakes to avoid. You should carefully consider the necessary materials beforehand, especially if you plan to start the work on a Saturday evening. I'm using a new pop-up drain assembly and a siphon from Hansgrohe. They are a bit more expensive, but also considerably better and certainly more durable than some competitors. It's also better to place a bowl underneath to keep everything clean than to lie down under it yourself. All the screw connections on the siphon are usually only hand-tightened and should remain watertight in the long run. Therefore, you should also be able to loosen them by hand. The lower arch contains wastewater, which is why I loosened the fittings there first. I hadn't expected this amount of debris. A siphon should be unscrewed regularly to remove hair and other debris. It's not for the faint of heart, and in hindsight, rubber gloves would have been a good idea. Now it's clear how such corrosion occurred. The trapped hair held aggressive cleaning agents in the siphon, giving them ample time to corrode the material. Disassembling it from below would definitely not have been a good idea. The connector to the drain pipe should be pulled out with a gentle twisting motion to ensure the socket remains in the drain pipe. It's also advisable to remove all debris before reassembling. The connection of the old pull rod must be disconnected before it's unscrewed from the drain assembly, which will be the next step. This is truly not a pleasant task, and once it's done, it's time to clean everything thoroughly before installing the new parts. When assembling the drain assembly, the most important thing to remember is that the soft, white seal goes under the drain and the black one under the sink. Before screwing it together, the rod should also be removed, which can then be cut to the correct length. The ring on the stopper must be unscrewed far enough so that the rod can be inserted. Once the rod is screwed in, the plug can be raised and lowered for testing. Now connect the two rods, and the first component is assembled, except for the final adjustments. Now I come to the siphon and its seals and fittings. It's worth noting that, except for the flat seal that goes into the drain assembly, all the other seals are conical, meaning they are compressed when the fittings are tightened, thus creating a seal. If you keep this in mind, nothing should go wrong during assembly. This is where the lubricant for the drain pipe socket comes into play; apply it thinly to the pipe. Now, apply the lubricant for the drain pipe socket in a thin layer. During the subsequent assembly, only the length of the spacer needs to be adjusted, and once all the screws are tightened, the job is done.
