Ghighiu Monastery - The Miracle-Working Icon of St. Mary ''Syriac'' In Ghighiu, the icon of "The Mother of God with the Child" stands in a place of honor, a miracle-working icon, a pinnacle of sacred art, coming from the parts of the Syrian Christians and dating back to the 16th century. In 1958, the icon was brought from Syria by Bishop Vasile Samaha and presented to Patriarch Justinian Marina. The miracle-working icon of the Mother of God was deposited at the Patriarchal Cathedral. The icon, painted on sandalwood, had already performed its first miracle, asking in a dream to be brought to Romania. The icon asked His Beatitude Patriarch Teoctist in a dream to be taken to the Ghighiu Monastery. The two hierarchs decided that the icon be taken to the Ghighiu Monastery, where it began to work miracles. And today the icon is in the church of this monastery. The older nuns of the monastery still remember what happened, an episode that remained vivid in their minds and hearts. On February 25, 1958, when the procession of bishops, led by Patriarch Justinian, entered the Church, the nuns were stunned with amazement. Suddenly, the Syrian guest, Bishop Samaha, burst into tears. With tears streaming down his face, he fell before the icon and began to ask forgiveness from the Mother of God for taking it from its place, for the unbelief of the people had driven it out of Syria. The icon increased the fame of the monastery, being yet another testimony of God's mercy and demonstrating once again that in this place "He made His church to dwell in". At the icon, according to an ancient Athonite fashion, a string of golden chains is strung - as a sign of thanks and gratitude for all the miracles performed through the mercy and prayers of the Holy Virgin.
