Episode 263 - Netherton Energy Hub Build (Month 1)

The Netherton Energy Hub. It is a massive 588 acre energy development near Longside in Aberdeenshire, Scotland which was approved by Aberdeenshire Council. As a major component of SSEN Transmission’s £22 billion grid upgrade, it will convert and route offshore renewable energy from northern Scotland to the rest of the UK. The site will house a massive 400,000 volt substation, a 132,000 substation, High Voltage Direct Current converter stations and a 30 metre tall transmission hall. The site is located about 850 metres from Longside and the sprawling footprint is estimated to be roughly four times larger than Disneyland Paris. The construction phase will support hundreds of jobs with Balfour Beatty being awarded a £325 million initial civil engineering contract for the first phase of the development. It will enable the UK and Scottish Governments to hit 2030 renewable energy targets by connecting multiple offshore wind projects and the proposed Eastern Green Link 3. The astronomical scale of the facility has drawn significant opposition from nearby Longside residents, prompting SSEN Transmission to modify plans by incorporating visual screening, bunding, and specific drainage measures.
