Jumping The Broom Movie Description: This is a film about social classes to some extent, and takes place during plans for a wedding. It focuses on the matriarch of the groom’s family, a postal worker, who feels slighted when it comes to the upcoming nuptials of her son and bride-to-be. Unfortunately the mothers of said bride and groom just don’t hit it off. The film concentrates on romantic relationships as well as social standing. I read that this is director Salim Akil’s first big picture and his visual work is nicely handled. Of course, with several scenes taking place at Martha’s Vineyard, it wouldn’t take Steven Spielberg to come up with something good. But still, Akil handles the comedy and emotions of the actors very well in addition to the scenery and backgrounds. As far as it being a family film, he comes closer than Tyler Perry has recently in making a film suitable for the family. The character of Sabrina Watson (Paula Patton) has had too many one-night stands, and is determined to remain pure in her sexual life until she gets married. When she meets Jason (Laz Alonso) she finds herself in romantic bliss. Unfortunately, despite Sabrina’s desire to be pure, the sexual content hits a three in the film in our content rating and there is one use of biblical profanity. Therefore, we are unable to award this otherwise nicely-told story our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal.
