We're on an icy mountain pass on the Italian-Austrian border, specifically at the historic Plöcken Pass (1357m), on a winter expedition through WWI bunkers and tunnels. Up there lies one of the world's largest open-air museums of the First World War, with entrenched positions, trenches, tunnel systems, and camouflaged structures built into the rock. What awaits us: Snow covers the blasted tunnels and hidden bunkers. We scramble through narrow passages, sometimes alone, amidst the steep slopes. The paths lead from Kaiserjäger towers deep into the tunnel system – perfectly positioned for observation and firing positions during the war. Breathtaking views of the Carnic Alps, with the underlying theme of war and nature in a post-glacial atmosphere.
