"How to" restore Sheaffer Vac-Fill with Triumph nib
This video will be a two for one - two Triumph Vac-Fillers with slight variations in cap threads and vac-knob attachment. Both pens turned out beautifully and were fairly easy to disassemble - after a little patience and time as they soaked for about a week in a cup of water. I did make a bit of a snafu in this video, and the last, as I called these Balance pens at first. I do catch my mistake in the video and set myself straight. I'm starting to get more familiar with my video editing software, so hopefully the chapter markers come through after the youtube upload and the onscreen comments help clarify things. I do love these pens, and Sheaffer's pens in general. I can't sing their praises enough as well-made, work-horse pens. These pens have the added benefit of using their barrels as the reservoir and, thus, have a darn good ink capacity. For the disassembly: -Heat source -Cup o' water for the soaking, soaking, soaking. -Grippers (I use cut up drawer liners) -A tool to remove the vac-filler knob - available at pen tooling or can be fashioned from forceps/tweezers -Dowel to fit the most of the internal diameter of the barrel to knock out the packing unit (alternative method of packing unit replacement to come soon) -Hammer or tool to apply force to the dowel in order to, essentially, knock out the packing unit. -Toothpick to push out the plunger rod (or other thin item) For the reassembly -Rubber washer for the packing unit (Indy-Pen-Dance, Anderson Pens, or other site of your choosing). -Rubber Cement -Shellac or your sealant of choice (packing unit and small nuts onto the plunger rod) -Replacement gasket (I get mine from Indy-Pen-Dance) -Possibly a tool to help replace the vac-filler rod. I recently saw a video where someone used the straw from a can of WD-40 to help guide the rod. The one I use is from Pentooling. -Silicone grease -Heat Source to help reseat the nib/the packing unit -Tool to replace second style of vac-filler knob (i.e. that bifurcated screw-driver/re-tooled forceps) -As always your choice of polishing materials - micro mesh, simichrome/metal polish, plastic polish, finishing wax as desired.
