#food #milwaukee This is a community education from Catholic Charities. Today I want to share important information about food assistance in Milwaukee. Many families in the US depend on SNAP, which is called FoodShare in Wisconsin. This program helps families buy groceries each month. However, sometimes families lose their SNAP because of changes to the program’s rules or the family’s income goes up. Occasionally, SNAP benefits may be late because of government funding problems. Many families may struggle to buy food when their SNAP benefits change. Today’s video will talk about how to use food pantries and has information at the end about halal food. What is SNAP / FoodShare SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. In Wisconsin, this program is called FoodShare. It helps families with limited incomes buy groceries each month. The benefits are placed on a QUEST or EBT card, which works like a debit card at grocery stores. Families can use this card to purchase food such as bread, rice, fruits, vegetables, milk, and other basic groceries. For many households, this program is an important source of support for meeting their daily food needs. How Food Pantries Help Food pantries are community locations where people can receive free groceries if they cannot afford food. Many churches, community centers, and nonprofit organizations operate food pantries to help families who need assistance. These organizations get food from donations, food banks, grocery stores, and community programs. When families visit a food pantry, they may receive items such as canned foods, rice, pasta, bread, fruits, vegetables, and sometimes dairy products or meat. Visiting a Food Pantry When you go to pick up food from a food pantry, they may ask for some basic information. You may need to show an identity card and proof of address, and they may ask how many people live in your household. Food pantries usually give food based on the number of people in the family, so each household may receive a different amount depending on family size. It is also helpful to bring your own bags or boxes, since many pantries do not provide them. Important Tips for Receiving Food Assistance It is a good idea to check the pantry’s days and hours of service before going because schedules may change. Some food pantries serve a limited number of families each day, so arriving early is a good idea. In addition, some locations may allow families to receive food only once per week or once per month. Some food pantries serve anybody and others only serve people in a certain zip code. Most food pantries are open to anyone who needs help. Food Pantries in Milwaukee There are many food pantries located across Milwaukee that serve different neighborhoods and ZIP codes.
