Marie Jaëll, Cello Concerto in F-Major - Andantino sostenuto
Marie Jaëll, an outstanding french female composer, pianist and pedagogue was born in 1846 in Steinseltz in Alsace and died in 1925. She studied piano under Ignaz Moscheles in Stuttgart and Heinrich Herz in Paris and became one of the most prominent pianists of her generation. One of her major influences and clostest friends was Franz Liszt who had a very high opion of Marie Jaëll: "[She] has the brains of a philosopher and the fingers of an artist." Marie Jaëll's recognition as a woman composer came quickly after she started to publish her works. Her cello concerto is one of her most outstanding compositions and dedicated to Jules Delsart, one of the leading cellist of his generation. Jaëll studied composition in Paris under Camille Saint-Saëns and César Franck. Her concerto style is clearly influenced by Saint-Saëns, but with her original and interesting treatment of harmony she creates her own expressive artistic voice. Marie Jäell's cello concert exists as a manuscript at the "Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire (Strasbourg)" and is here performed by cellist Verena Sennekamp and the Orchestra of the Berufsfachschule für Musik Dinkelsbühl in Bavaria, Germany under conductor Rüdiger Bohn. Marie Jaell is a contemporary of Mel Bonis and like her an almost forgotten female composer who highly deserves to be brought back to classical concert halls.
