In this interview, investigative journalist Ethan Gutmann reflects on more than twenty years of research dedicated to the repression of Falun Gong and the evolution of the Chinese security system in Xinjiang. A former expatriate in Beijing in the late 1990s, Ethan Gutmann recounts witnessing the political shift that followed the rally of April 25, 1999, in front of Zhongnanhai. According to him, this event was used by the Chinese authorities to justify a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong, accompanied by massive propaganda and large-scale arrests. During his research, he claims to have identified a recurring element in the testimonies of former detainees: highly targeted medical examinations—blood tests, electrocardiograms, eye exams, and biological analyses—conducted without any apparent therapeutic purpose. These procedures reportedly primarily targeted Falun Gong practitioners detained in Chinese camps and prisons. Based on these testimonies, Ethan Gutmann develops the hypothesis of a structured system of forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience. He links this hypothesis to the explosion in the number of transplants in China in the 2000s and the rapid expansion of hospitals performing transplants. Gutmann also describes Xinjiang as a laboratory of social control combining internment camps, forced labor, algorithmic surveillance, and digital population control. Several passages of the interview draw parallels with George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four, particularly regarding the concepts of total surveillance and technological power.
