El Monte is a residential, industrial, and commercial city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Located approximately 12 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, El Monte is the hub of the San Gabriel Valley, where two major freeways - Interstates 605 and 10 - intersect and is the ninth largest city (out of 88) in Los Angeles County with a population of approximately 120,000. El Monte's slogan is "Welcome to Friendly El Monte" and historically is known as "The End of the Santa Fe Trail". As of 2019, El Monte was the 54th-largest city in California. El Monte is situated between the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo Rivers; residents claimed that anything could be grown in the area. Between 1770 and 1830, Spanish soldiers and missionaries often stopped here for respite. They called the area 'El Monte,' which in Spanish means 'the mountain' or 'the mount'. Most people assume the name refers to a mountain, but there were no mountains in the valley. Chinatown is a neighborhood in Downtown Los Angeles, California that became a commercial center for Chinese and other Asian businesses in Central Los Angeles in 1938. The area includes restaurants, shops and art galleries but also has a residential neighborhood. Chinatown is a festive destination for dining and shopping. Pagoda-style buildings with red lanterns house traditional Chinese restaurants, dim sum houses and bakeries, plus specialty grocery stores and gift shops. There’s also the Taoist Thien Hau Temple, small art galleries and dark bars. Foodies head to creative Asian-fusion eateries and the landmark Philippe the Original, lauded for its French dip sandwich. There are two schools and a branch library in Chinatown, as well as a city park and a state park. Many motion pictures have been filmed in the area.
