Preventing School Dropouts in Burundi: Bonheur's Story | Cordaid
In Muramvya, in central Burundi, a boy named Bonheur nearly lost far more than a year of school. His journey back to the classroom is one of many made possible by Cordaid’s education project in the region. Burundi's education system faces significant challenges. According to a 2024 UNESCO brief, 96 per cent of ten-year-olds cannot read and understand age-appropriate texts. This is one of the highest rates of learning poverty in the world. Fewer than half of boys complete primary school, and only around a third of all children finish lower secondary education. The problem is not simply one of access: as the brief notes indicate, schooling does not guarantee learning, and poor learning outcomes themselves drive children to drop out. --- Cordaid is an internationally operating emergency relief and development organisation, working in and on fragility. www.cordaid.org/en Facebook: cordaidEN Twitter: @cordaid Instagram: @cordaid_international LinkedIn: company/cordaid
