Why is the Caspian Sea Drying Up? This is the Caspian Sea, and something very strange is happening here. Russia to the north and Iran to the south, and some other smaller neighbors. The Caspian Sea technically isn't a sea because it's not directly connected to any ocean. It's the largest lake in the world. The definition of a sea was given by ancient navigators because of its salty water and immense size. What defines a true sea is its connection to the ocean. And there's something here we need to understand. Why is the Caspian Sea drying up? Where does its source come from? And what are the predictions for the coming years? Could this place become a salty sand desert? This body of water is roughly the size of Mato Grosso do Sul (Brazil). And twice the size of Paraná (Brazil). It's an immense amount of saltwater in the middle of the earth. How did this saltwater get there? If all the water from the Caspian Sea were to fall on Brazil, we would have floods of up to 9 meters across the country for several days. All this water hasn't been stagnant there for millions of years. In fact, freshwater rivers flow into the Caspian Sea. The Volga River alone is responsible for 80% of all the water that enters the Caspian. After it comes the Ural River, the Kura River, and some others. The problem is that all these rivers that flow into the Caspian Sea are freshwater. So how can the Caspian Sea, without a connection to the ocean and receiving only freshwater, have saltwater?
