PVC flooring was widely used in apartments, stairwells, offices, and industrial and administrative buildings starting in the 1960s. They were inexpensive, easy to maintain, resistant to water and dirt, and easy to keep clean with a damp mop. PVC flooring fell into disrepute due to the harmful fumes emitted by the plasticizers contained in soft PVC at the time. PVC is also flammable. This releases toxic gases such as hydrogen chloride, dioxins, and aromatics. Major fires involving PVC contributed to a rethink. Vinyl flooring is hygienic and easy to maintain. The flooring is warm to the touch. It is resistant to moisture. However, it tends to have a negative impact on the indoor climate, as PVC neither absorbs nor releases moisture and therefore has no humidity-regulating effect. Solid vinyl is also suitable for damp rooms, hospitals, and kindergartens. Its resistance to acids and alkalis makes solid vinyl suitable for industrial buildings and laboratories. Vinyl is available in a wide range of designs and colors. Texturing the surface creates a special "grip" (tactile feel). By combining appearance and surface texture, stone or wood decors can also be realistically recreated, although the lack of the cool feel of stone can be confusing with stone imitations. Noise levels in the room (room sound) and in adjacent rooms (impact sound) are lower than with laminate flooring. The impact sound insulation required for floating installation further enhances this advantage. The flooring is more susceptible to scratches than with laminate. Even small stones under shoes or hard chair casters can cause scratches. On the other hand, dishes break significantly less than on laminate, wood, or stone floors.
