In Chapter 4 of our Grand Circle tour of the United States' West Coast national parks, we leave the mountain landscapes behind and begin traveling toward more desert-like lands, seeking out Death Valley National Park. The variety of landscapes in Death Valley National Park offers the photographer an endless array of possibilities. A barren landscape, with wastelands and harsh climatic conditions due to its location 86 meters below sea level. The distances in Death Valley National Park are enormous, and we organized our visit as follows: 1️⃣ First, we visited the Mesquite Flat Dunes, a beautiful place due to the contrast between the mountains on the other side of the valley and reminiscent of the African Sahara. 2️⃣ We continued on to Furnace Creek and arrived at Harmony Borax Works, an abandoned borax extraction plant that was once used to make soap. 3️⃣ We finally arrived at Furnace Creek, where the Visitor Center is located. There, a large digital thermometer greeted us, frightening us with its 41 degrees, and we registered our visit by showing our Annual Pass, since Death Valley doesn't have any entrance booths. 4️⃣ The next stop on our route through Death Valley is Golden Canyon. It's a good place to take refuge during the central hours of the day, in the shade of the walls of this beautiful route that was used in several Star Wars scenes. 5️⃣ Afterwards, we took refuge from the high temperatures in our car, driving along Artist Drive, which flows gently for 9 miles until reaching its most famous point, the "artist's palette." 6️⃣ We continued on to reach Devils Golf Course, the strangest spot in the entire park. There, the evaporation of Lake Manly has exposed all its salt. Time and erosion over the millennia have carved curious shapes we couldn't believe. 7️⃣ Then, in Badwater Basin, we walked on protected salt flats where the highest temperatures in the park were recorded, at a record 58°C. As we walked deeper, the tourists disappeared, and the hexagonal beauty of the salt flats' shapes emerged, embellishing the landscape. 8️⃣ And we ended at Zabriskie Point, one of the most attractive spots for sunset viewing.
