"Nature's Best Hope" by Dr. Doug Tallamy

Doug Tallamy, Professor of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Delaware and a leading expert on native plants and wildlife conservation, presents on the problem of wildlife fragmentation and habitat degradation. Life support systems across the planet are in jeopardy: the growing human impact on the planet has destroyed more than half the world's ecosystems, leaving the rest scattered and unconnected. However, if people make small changes, Doug argues that we can restore healthy ecological networks and weather the changes ahead. These networks start with healthy plants and insects. Private landowners can be crucial to conservation efforts by transforming their land into wildlife habitats through planting key native plants, effectively creating a homegrown National Park. Homegrown National Park is Doug Tallamy's challenge to create diverse ecosystems in our yards, communities, farms, and surrounding lands by reducing lawn, planting native, and removing invasives. The goal of HNP is to create a national movement to restore 20 million acres with natives, an area representing ½ of what is now in lawn, as well as millions more acres in agriculture and woodlots.
