But higher strength pipe is being used now that requires low hydrogen electrodes to be used for root, fill, and cap passes. 7016 is a low hydrogen electrode and is similar to 7018 but has less iron powder which makes it slightly easier for open root welds. In this video, my friend Andrew Cardin shows his technique and settings for welding an open root using 7016 low hydrogen rod.
