There was no buzzing sound whatsoever in the speakers. The rest, despite the age of the unit, was all working normally. After some checks, the 2 electrolytic capacitors for the sound output were found to be faulty. One was completely blown (open) and the other had extremely low capacitance. These were preventing sound from passing through. After replacing them, everything went back to normal.
