Initially, construction of the canal was carried out almost entirely by hand under scorching sun temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius. Around 1.5 million Egyptian fellahin peasants, forced into forced labor, died daily from the unbearable heat, cholera, dysentery, and lack of drinking water. Construction workers had to work knee-deep in the liquid mud of the shallow, salty Lake Manzala, battling malarial mosquitoes and sandstorms that completely buried the completed trenches overnight. To save the massive project from imminent disaster, engineers were forced to cut a 130-kilometer-long auxiliary freshwater channel, the Ismailia Canal, directly from the mighty Nile. The Suez Canal's enormous geopolitical influence provoked some of the most vicious political intrigues of the nineteenth century. Britain launched a powerful public relations campaign, seeking to block construction and maintain its monopoly over the shipping lanes around Africa. For a long time, the Ottoman Empire refused to ratify official documents. The turning point, when the adventure turned into a true triumph of progress, was Ismail Pasha's official ban on the forced labor of fellahin. This forced Lesseps to urgently introduce innovative mechanization: giant steam shovels and powerful floating dredges that operated around the clock. The main secret of the Suez Canal's success and engineering genius lay in the exquisite use of the isthmus's natural geography. Unlike the complex Panama Canal, the Egyptian project avoided the construction of expensive artificial locks thanks to a chain of natural salt lakes, which served as giant buffers to dampen dangerous seasonal currents. The waterway's ceremonial opening took place on November 17, 1806, in the presence of European monarchs. However, Egypt's subsequent bankruptcy allowed England to buy the shares and establish its control over the region. A century later, the massive crisis of 2021 with the blocking of the container ship Ever Given clearly demonstrated how vulnerable the modern world economy is and how much global trade depends on this narrow sandy artery, built at the cost of tens of thousands of human lives.
