Glenwood Springs and Marble, Colorado
In this video we pay a visit to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 2013, AOPA ranked Glenwood Springs as the "#1 Most Challenging Airport” in the US based on a survey of AOPA members (link below). While Glenwood has the potential to be very challenging, it was docile for our visit. This emphasizes what I continue to say in my videos, mountain flying is possible if you wait for the right conditions. I would avoid Glenwood on a high wind and/or high density altitude day. After our quick stop into Glenwood we press on to what may ACTUALLY be the most challenging airport I’ve ever visited – Marble, Colorado. You won’t find Marble listed on any sectional. It’s a private airstrip in the beautiful Crystal River Valley. Thanks to the incredible generosity of its owners, you can visit Marble Airstrip with prior permission. If you plan to visit Marble please study the RAF Airfield Guide and complete the eWaiver prior to your arrival. This is NOT an airfield for an inexperienced mountain pilot. It’s a relatively short runway subject to severe downdrafts, high density altitude, and is surrounded by unforgiving terrain. In short, it makes Glenwood look like a walk in the park.
