Surf Candy - They really are quite easy

For a simple see through minnow, there probably is not any better fly than the surf candy. Originally designed by Bob Popovics to imitate small eels for sharp teethed bluefish. Coating the material in resin helped keep those teeth from destroying the fly after just one strike. They are still one of the most durable, flies out there. I honestly have never had to retire a surf candy. Ive lost several, but always seem to loose them before I ever have to stop fishing them. Originally Popovic's used epoxy like 5 minute epoxy to create the bodies, however modern tires now benefit from the fast curing UV resin. There are many brands out there, but still to this day I think solarez cannot be beat for both their prices and variety of different resins. I actually use 3 different resins for this fly, their thin formula to hold the fiber into place. Then the medium viscosity for bulking up the body a bit. And then finish it with the Ultra thin which has a built in paint brush making it perfect for coating the whole body with a thin layer of very hard resin.
