When he heard that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu is the best of devotees, he thought, “I should hear from Him.” This reflects the natural tendency of conditioned souls—everyone desires to hear about Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. But the real question is not only desire, but also the qualification to hear. A conditioned mind cannot easily receive transcendental topics because it immediately projects its own experiences, emotions, and conditioning. Even while hearing, one may not truly hear. Thus, even though there is attraction for spiritual topics, without purification, real hearing does not happen. A conditioned soul may also approach fear-based religiosity, where God is understood through fear or external obligation. But pure bhakti is beyond fear—it is based on love and surrender. However, such a soul often does not consider: “What is my qualification?” We want the highest speaker and the highest topic, but we do not examine our readiness to receive it. Because of this, recognition of a pure devotee (sadhu) is also difficult. Without purity, we cannot properly identify purity. ⸻ The real transformation begins when one develops humility and dependence on mercy. When a devotee realizes, “I have no qualification on my own,” then the heart begins to open. At that point, one understands that everything in spiritual life comes through guru’s mercy. Guru is not ordinary; Guru is the manifestation of Bhagavān’s compassion. Guru connects the disciple to Kṛṣṇa. Therefore, it is said: Krishna gives Guru, and Guru gives Krishna. Guru is like a channel of mercy—just as water flows from a reservoir through pipes, similarly mercy flows from Kṛṣṇa through guru to the disciple. ⸻ In the beginning, one may have more direct faith in Kṛṣṇa, but gradually one understands that guru is essential for accessing Kṛṣṇa properly. Without purification, hearing and service remain unstable (bhakti-ābhāsa). But when sincerity increases, service becomes steady—this is the stage of niṣṭhā. In niṣṭhā, service continues regardless of the mind’s liking or disliking. One begins to understand, “This is my eternal occupation.” Through continuous hearing, chanting, and service, the heart becomes purified, and bhakti gradually moves toward śuddha-bhakti. At that stage, remembrance of Kṛṣṇa becomes natural and spontaneous, and devotion flows from the heart. ⸻ Ultimately, everything depends on mercy. Even the ability to recognize a pure devotee comes only when the heart becomes purified. From desire → to humility → to service → to steadiness → to pure devotion, the soul is gradually transformed. And at every stage, the essential principle remains: Bhakti is received, not achieved—it flows by mercy. ⸻ Similarly, our desires, mind, and intelligence are still covered by impurities. Therefore, we may desire the highest topics, but we may not even recognize their true nature. “From desire to devotion, the soul progresses only by humility, service, and the mercy flowing through Guru to Kṛṣṇa.” 🙏🙏
