"Ban Chi Wang Khan" in Suan Mon Subdistrict, Mancha Khiri District, Khon Kaen Province, is a village nestled on the banks of the Chi River, Thailand's longest river. The village is flooded every year, limiting rice production. Therefore, it is necessary to exchange abundant natural resources for rice with relatives in other districts. These items are traded for rice, including water hyacinth, bamboo shoots, bananas, and fish. But the most important item is the mat. This village is a sedge-weaving village, and almost every woman is a skilled weaver. Almost every household has a mat stored in a closet. The mats are made from sedge. The triangular sedge is called "Phue" and the round sedge is called "Lai." The sedge used for weaving grows in the village's ponds. Once the sedge is harvested, it is dried and then woven. The weavers maintain a mat-making workshop, or "Hong Tam Sat" (traditional weaving shed), either under or inside their homes. Each mat takes one to three days to weave, depending on the pattern. Although "mats" are valuable and can be converted into cash, the villagers don't sell these lovingly woven mats. They keep them to give to visiting relatives and use as a gift for merit-making. Most importantly, the mat makers told us they were proud because it was a gift they made themselves. Follow the story of this special bond and kindness. Although it's fading with each passing day, it's still very much present here.
