Not a Drop of Water | Old Ironsides and the Rotten Water #USSConstitution #OldIronsides #1812

Happy 4th of July! August, 1812. Old Ironsides sails from Boston with cannon, discipline, thousands of gallons of water — and a suspiciously generous supply of rum. When USS Constitution returns, the water is still aboard. The spirits are not. Not a Drop of Water is a darkly comic American naval drinking song inspired by the famous tall tale attached to USS Constitution, “Old Ironsides.” The song deliberately mixes that exaggerated drinking legend with the real 1812 victory over HMS Guerriere, the battle that helped give Constitution her enduring nickname. This is not a literal reconstruction of the ship’s log. The enormous quantities of rum, wine and stagnant water belong to a later sailor’s legend — retold here as a solemn naval report in which every bottle disappears in the service of morale, while the undrinkable water remains perfectly secure. Fife, rope drum, concertina and a deadpan sailor chorus accompany a crew that displays impeccable discipline whenever alcohol must be counted, inspected or medically issued. The rum was absent from inventory. The Portuguese wine was also absent. Cause of absence: not recorded. The log shows no irregularities. 🎵 Bloody Hopes Songs of war, mercy and forgotten men — with occasional failures of naval accounting.
