MAREK PASIECZNY August 2025, Leeds, United Kingdom. I. Anno MCXXXII (Prologus) (Year 1132 — Prologue) „Silentium Conditorum” (“Founding Silence”) II. Capella Novem Altarum (The Chapel of Nine Altars) „Ubi Umbræ Canunt et Fornices Surgunt” (“Where Shadows Chant and Arches Rise”) III. Turris (The Tower) „Pulsus Temporis, Speculator Supernus” (“The Toll of Time, the Watcher Above”) IV. Tredecim Monachi (The Thirteen Monks) „Votum” (“The Vow”) V. Aula Magna (The Great Hall) „Symmetria in Lapis et Sonus” (“Symmetry in Stone and Sound”) VI. Anno MMXXV (Epilogus) (Year 2025 — Epilogue) „Reditus ad Lucem” (“Return to Light”) for 13-Course Baroque Lute Inspired by Fountains Abbey (a Cistercian monastery) in Ripon, North Yorkshire, its architecture, history, legends, and myths MAREK PASIECZNY The Suite Fountains Abbey is a work free from the historical associations that usually accompany writing for a historical instrument—in this case, the 13-course Baroque lute. There are no quotations of period melodies, no faithful imitations of traditional forms, nor stylistic borrowings typical of the instrument. Instead, it is a contemporary composition, modern in language and harmony, and open in form. From the very beginning, I aimed to write in an idiomatic way, shaped by the physical possibilities of the lute itself. The piece employs the standard lute tuning in thirds (built on a D minor chord), and thus the physical layout of the notes on the fingerboard strongly influenced the composition, particularly its harmonic character. The architectural complex of Fountains Abbey served as the principal source of inspiration. This remarkable site, imbued with beauty and a sense of enchantment, is not only of profound historical significance but is also enshrouded in myths and legends. The name “Fountains” most likely derives from the six natural springs located in the valley. The suite is organized into six movements, corresponding to this symbolic point of departure. Today, the entire estate is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
