Overall Summary Spiritual warfare in the New Testament should not be understood as centering on battles against demons. The New Testament does not present a model of intercessory prayer that binds local evil spirits. Jesus did not teach that one should bind the demons ruling a city before entering it. There is no record of Paul binding local demons in Athens or Ephesus, either. Similarly, there is no record of the early church gathering to pray in order to bind the spirits of a specific region. The center of the spiritual warfare shown in the New Testament is to set people free by proclaiming the truth. Satan is not a being with unlimited power as people think. Satan's power lies in usurping and using the dominion that God gave to man. Satan cannot act at will without human cooperation and consent. Through the cross, Jesus has already destroyed the power of the devil. Rulers and authorities have already been neutralized. Therefore, the battle of the saints is not a fight to gain victory, but a fight to stand upon the victory already obtained. Satan works through lies and deception rather than through authority. He deceives us into believing that we do not possess what we already have. The true battlefield of spiritual warfare is our thoughts. 2 Corinthians Chapter 10 explains strongholds and the war of thoughts. Strongholds are flawed thought systems that have been believed repeatedly over a long period. Senses of guilt, fear, failure, and poverty can become strongholds. The Word of God is the power that demolishes these strongholds. To take hold of every thought means not neglecting thoughts but examining them with the Word. A believer is not someone who is taken hold of thoughts, but someone who takes hold of thoughts. When depressing or fearful thoughts arise, one must counterattack with the Word. The devil's weapon is false thoughts. The believer's weapon is the Word of God. The full armor described in Ephesians Chapter 6 is also entirely connected to the Word. In explaining spiritual warfare, Paul did not teach us to bind local demons. Rather, he said to arm ourselves with the Word to resist the schemes of the devil. While the ministry of casting out demons is biblical, it must be distinguished from spiritual warfare. Even if demons depart, if one's mindset does not change, the same problems may recur. True freedom endures when one's mindset is transformed by the Word. The way to overcome condemnation is not to bind the spirit of condemnation, but to believe in the Gospel. The way to overcome fear is not to wrestle with it, but to know God's love. Satan's power lies in falsehood, but the truth destroys falsehood. The reason Ephesus was transformed was not because the local demons were bound, but because the people came to believe the truth. As the Gospel was preached, the strongholds of idolatry crumbled. The most powerful way to transform people and cities is to plant God's truth. The spiritual warfare of the New Testament is not fighting against the power of the devil, but to tear down the devil's lies with the Word of God.
