RENAULT SYMBOL Y UNA BREVE HISTORIA CON GUSTAVO FOSCO. AUTO AL DÍA RETRO. (3.1.2009)

A story within a historical note. The late Gustavo Fosco was Director of Communications at Renault Argentina, and in 2008, he told us in this interview why there was a Clio with a trunk and later a Symbol. The anecdotal fact is that the three-body Clio was shown for the first time at the 2000 Buenos Aires show, and that's where I met Gustavo. Someone introduced him to me as an Argentine designer and successful European designer. I was outraged by the design of the Clio with a trunk and immediately shook his hand while asking: "Are you a European designer? Tell me who the son of a bitch was who designed this car?" "Me," he replied. It was no longer time to back down. The blunder had been made... or it was like putting my foot in it on fresh concrete. All I could do was continue down that clumsily chosen path. "Well...and why did you do something so ugly?" Gustavo was, above all, very polite and respectful, and he took a few minutes to explain to me that with the resources he had and the company's plans for that car, he couldn't perform miracles. When the Symbol was launched eight years later and he was Director at Renault Argentina, it was time to remember that anecdote and why the Symbol was more similar to what Gustavo intended to do with the Clio.
