He projects Georges, his literary alter ego, onto the project, entrusting him with a utopian mission: to stage Jean Anouilh's play "Antigone" in Beirut in 1982. The initial idea is as fragile as it is sublime: to recruit an actor from each opposing camp to perform together on the front line. Far from claiming to be making peace, Georges is simply seeking a two-hour truce, a moment where the poetry of Jean Anouilh would replace the slogans and shouts. But the reality of war catches up with the project. Sorj Chalandon uses the power of fiction to revisit the horror of the Sabra and Shatila massacres. Where the journalist once had to restrain his tears to bear witness objectively, the writer allows himself to explore the gaping wound of one who has walked in human blood. The book draws a clear line between the man and his character. Sorj Chalandon explains that he chose to return home in peace for his mental health and his family, while sending Georges to the brink of despair.
